Nakonde Town Council Services

Nakonde Town Council performs the following services amongst others;

  1. Maintains law and order and ensures local security and the good administration of the council.
  2. Regulates the erection and display of advertisements and advertising devises in, or in view of, streets and other public places.
  3. Controls the slaughtering of animals where the meat is intended for human consumption.
  4. Controls the sale of meat.
  5. Requires the disposal of diseased animals and carcasses whose meat is unfit for human consumption.
  6. Establishes and maintains abattoirs, and plans for the processing of by-products from abattoirs.
  7. Controls the movement of the carcasses of animals.
  8. Exercises general control, care and maintenance of all public roads, streets, avenues, lanes, sanitary lanes and foot walks forming part thereof, bridges, squares, ferries and water courses and to remove all obstacles therefrom.
  9. Prohibits and controls the erection and laying in, under or over, and the removal from, streets and other public places of:

(i) posts, wires, pipes, conduits, cable and other apparatus;

(ii) temporary platforms, seats and other structures; and

(iii) street decorations.

  1. Prepares and administers schemes for the encouragement of and participation in, community development.
  2. Establishes and maintains a system of lighting in streets and other public places.
  3. Establishes and maintains firefighting and prevention services, and takes and causes the taking of measures for the protection of life, property and natural resources from damages by fire.
  4. Controls persons and premises engaged in or used for the manufacture, preparation, storage, handling, sale or distribution of items of food or drink.
  5. Establishes and maintains premises for the sale of food and drink, including beer and other intoxicating liquor for consumption on or off the premises.
  6. Prohibits and controls the development and use of land and buildings and the erection of buildings, in the interests of public health, public safety, and the proper and orderly development of the area of the local authority.
  7. Removes, lowers or trims to the satisfaction of the council any tree shrub or hedge over hanging or interfering with traffic in any street or with any wires, or with works of the local authority.
  8. Assigns names to localities, and numbers to premises which shall be displayed at the premises.
  9. Establishes and maintains environmental health services.
  10. Establishes and maintains cemeteries and mortuaries, and otherwise provide for and control of the dead, and destitute persons who die in the area of the local authority.
  11. Controls the storage, sale and use of petroleum products.
  12. Takes and requires the taking of measures for the preservation and improvement of public health and the prevention and abatement of nuisances, including measures for the extermination of mosquitoes and other insects, rats, mice and other vermin.
  13. Controls persons, premises and land engaged in or used for the holding of any fair circus, fete or other entertainment, recreation or assembly to which the public are entitled or permitted to have access, whether on payment or otherwise.
  1. Keeps and maintains the:
  2. enumeration and registration of persons or property for any purpose connected with the administration of the area of the local authority;
  3. register of births, marriages and deaths;
  • register of clubs; and
  1. register of transactions in connection with land charges that may be prescribed in any written law relating to land charges.
  2. Establishes and maintains sanitary convenience and ablution facilities and require, whenever necessary, the establishment and maintenance of those facilities.
  3. Establishes and maintains sanitary services for the removal and destruction of, or otherwise dealing with, all kinds of refuse and effluent, and compel the use of those services.
  4. Establishes and maintains drains, sewers and works for the disposal of sewerage and refuse.
  5. Requires and controls the provision of drains and sewers and compels the connection of any drains and sewers established by the local authority.
  6. Takes and requires the taking of measures for the conservation and the prevention of the pollution of supplies of water.
  7. Manages storm water management systems in built up areas.
  8. Develops trading regulations.
  9. Issues trading permits and licenses.
  10. Establishes and maintains facilities for the accommodation, care and burial of animals.
  11. Manages refuse removal, refuse dumps and disposal of solid waste.
